I’m here today because my brother is a renter in Menlo Park and he had a drug charge that had him go to jail for some years. Now, he’s a renter working to be an electrician. If he didn’t have the opportunity to become a renter, he might have had to leave the area and be isolated from his family, leading him to sell drugs and return to prison. I think a City Council has a duty to prevent recidivism in its community and work towards creating more diversity because people of color are overwhelming [targeted by] police and criminal charges. I think that segregation can lead to demonization and problems within families. City Council has a duty to prevent families from being broken up by things like white supremacy and white privilege.
